This, to understand the field of systematic, it is important to understand its history as well as relevant history of early bacteriology. From the time that bacteria were first observed in the 17th century until the 20th century, bacterial nomenclature was quite colloquial in nature. Following early taxonomical efforts in the late 19th century, the creation of the International Committee on Nomenclature of Bacteria formalized the field of Bacterial Systematics by creating the International Code of Nomenclature of Bacteria. It was designed to provide regulations and recommendations for the nomenclature of bacteria. Marine bacteria provide a unique challenge within the field of systematic because most of the numerically dominant species fall within the category of uncultured organisms. Despite the fact that many species have been identified as novel via phylogenetic analysis alone, a scientific name cannot be assigned to a novel taxon without providing phenotypic information as well.</style>
<work-type><style face="normal" font="default" size="100%">Undergraduate</style></work-type></record></records></xml>
