Deborah's responsibilities include:

  • Overall leadership of the ELI, including the intensive English program and special programs (grants and contracts), and working with the ELI Management Team to set goals, benchmarks and budgets
  • Recruiting students and working with sponsoring agencies for individuals and groups coming to the ELI
  • Grant writing
  • English language teaching and teacher training with a focus on technology in education
Profile: 
Deborah Healey is currently Director and Associate Professor at the English Language Institute. She has been at the ELI since 1979 and combining ESL and computers since 1984. She is currently a co-editor of The ORTESOL Journal. The former editor of CAELL Journal, author of Something to Do on Tuesday, and a former chair of the CALL Interest Section of TESOL, she has written and presented extensively on computer-assisted language learning (CALL) and administrative uses of computers. Recent computer consulting has taken her to Vietnam, Mexico, Tunisia, Thailand, Qatar, Oman, Taiwan, France, Brazil, Puerto Rico, Egypt and Turkey. She is a contributor to CALL Environments (first and second editions) and A Handbook for Language Program Administrators. Deborah has helped set up computer labs for the ELI at OSU and in Yemen, where she was a teacher and computer coordinator for the Yemen-America Language Institute. Her doctorate is in the field of computers in education. She currently serves in the OSU Faculty Senate and on OSU's Campus Planning Committee and International Student Recruitment Committee.
