All international students and their accompanying dependents are required to have health insurance while enrolled at an OUS institution. Medical costs can be very expensive in the U.S. and it is in your best interest that you have health insurance. As part of your immigration status as a J-1 Exchange visitor or a F-1 Student, the U.S. government has set minimum requirements for health insurance coverage.

Because of the government requirement for you to have health insurance, this cost is automatically charged to your student account.  If you have health insurance from your home country, and it meets or exceeds the minimum standard, then you may be able to qualify for a waiver.

Below is specific campus information and links to determine if your health insurance meets the minimum criteria.  If it does not, you will not be able to qualify for a health insurance waiver and will need to purchase a policy for the time that you are enrolled as a student.

Eastern Oregon University

The insurance must be purchased at registration for each term and must be kept current during the student's enrollment at Eastern. The insurance costs approximately $850.00 per year. If the student's parents or government provides major medical insurance coverage for the student in the U.S., proof of the coverage must be provided to the International Student Advisor upon arrival. Existing coverage must meet the minimum requirements for an exception.

Insurance requirements

Portland State University

International students must show proof of having health insurance comparable to the extended coverage offered by PSU student health services. The cost for insurance is automatically charged to your student account each term unless you can document that you have comparable coverage.

If you have existing health insurance that offers coverage comparable to or greater than the PSU sponsored plan, you may file for a waiver from purchasing the PSU sponsored insurance plan.

If your coverage is through a local or American insurance company, it is quite possible that it does not include medical evacuation and repatriation; if this is the case, you need to purchase a separate policy.

Click here for a summary about the health insurance policy or visit the International Student Services (click on 'International Student and Faculty Services,' then on 'Resources') if you have questions about insurance or the waiver process.

  • Medical evacuation expenses of no less than $10,000 USD -Repatriation expenses of no less than $7,500

In addition, all full time students are enrolled in a mandatory additional comprehensive health insurance plan each term they are registered for classes.
