Jumping into a New Culture

Finance major Paul Heim is taking his studies beyond the OSU campus, and even beyond the United States. He is currently working as a finance intern at a wealth management firm in the heart of London’s historic financial district, and blogging about the experience. This fall he will study international finance at Lund University, in Sweden, through the College of Business Arthur Stonehill Study Abroad Program.

International Climate Change Researchers Convene at OSU July 8-11

Some of the world’s leading climate change researchers will gather at Oregon State University July 8-11 for a conference that examines past changes in the Earth's systems in order to better predict what may happen in the future. The conference is part of an international effort called PAGES (Past Global Changes), a core project of the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme, which is funded by the National Science Foundation and NOAA in the United States and Switzerland. Some 330 climate change scientists from around the world will discuss their research, representing institutions in the United States, China, France, Sweden, Argentina, Switzerland, Mexico, Chile, United Kingdom, Finland, Morocco, Germany, Japan and elsewhere.

International Group of Scholars Gather at OSU for "Margaret Cavendish and Nature" Conference

An international group of scholars will meet at OSU June 19-21 to discuss the work of Margaret Cavendish, the Duchess of Newcastle.

Cavendish (1623–1673) was the first woman to publish scientific works in English, as well as works of poetry, plays, orations, letters and science fiction. The theme of the conference is "Margaret Cavendish and Nature." All conference sessions are free and open to the public and will be held at the Center for Humanities (Autzen House), 811 S.W. Jefferson Ave., Corvallis.

Stephen Clucas of the University of London will deliver the keynote talk on Friday, June 19, at 5:30 p.m. at the center.

Visiting Writer Series Brings Scottish-born Novelist to OSU

Scottish-born novelist Margot Livesey will visit the Oregon State University campus on Friday, May 15, to read from her most recent work, the award-winning novel The House on Fortune Street.

A question-and-answer session and a book-signing will follow the reading, which begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Valley Library’s first floor rotunda. The event is free and open to the public.

Livesey was raised in a boys' school in the Scottish Highlands where her father taught and her mother was the school nurse. After getting her bachelor's degree at the University of York, Livesey worked in shops and restaurants while honing her craft as a fiction writer. Her efforts began to pay off in 1986, with the publication of her short story collection, Learning by Heart, published by Penguin/Canada.
