OSU Professor to Test Beijing Air Quality at Olympics

A researcher from Oregon State University will travel to smog-cloaked Beijing this month to monitor the air quality before and during the Olympics and see what impact cleanup efforts have had. "Hopefully, the research will help the Chinese government to better understand how it can control air quality in large cities," said Staci Simonich, an associate professor of chemistry and toxicology.

OSU Alumnus Donates Textbooks to Iraqi University

Joshua Mater, an International Degree graduate, recently served an eight-month tour in Iraq. Now he is working to send engineering and business textbooks to Dhi Qar University.

Eunice Naswali, a senior in electrical engineering from Kampala, Uganda, and her mentor, Chris Bell, associate dean in the College of Engineering, are featured in the summer issue of Terra. Bell's family volunteered through Crossroads International, a community organization in the Office of International Programs, to welcome Naswali to the United States in 2004. With his encouragement, Naswali has pursued internships in the Multiple Engineering Cooperative Program (MECOP)—experience she hopes will help her in a future career back in Uganda, tackling the country’s problems with power generation and distribution to remote areas.

Sustainable Supply Chains: Recycling Spurs Innovation

Recycling isn’t just for consumers. Manufacturers are finding competitive advantages in what is known as "end-of-life product management," says OSU business professor Zhaohui Wu. While dealing with old desktop computers and other high-tech cast-offs can be expensive, innovative companies are redesigning their products — and their supply chains — in response to "take-back" laws cropping up from the Pacific Rim to the European Union. ...Wu specializes in business sustainability and supply chain management. In collaboration with the Green Electronics Council in Portland, Oregon, and the Chinese State Environmental Agency, he is studying e-waste policies at companies in the United States and China.

Terri Irwin Partners with OSU for Humpback Whale Research

Terri Irwin, whose efforts with Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin and daughter Bindi to protect wildlife have made her an international figure in conservation advocacy, has signed an agreement with the Marine Mammal Institute at Oregon State University to fund two humpback whale research projects. The agreement furthers Terri Irwin and Australia Zoo’s commitment to conservation and helps support the work of the OSU institute to gather critical data on endangered and threatened marine mammal species.

OSU Students Receive $26,000 in Scholarships for International Degree and Education Abroad

Ten undergraduates at Oregon State University have been selected to receive scholarships totaling $26,000 for international research and education abroad in 2008-09. The scholarship program includes six awards administered by the International Degree and Education Abroad (IDEA) office. A committee of OSU faculty and staff members selects students for the scholarships each year.

Six OSU Students Receive 2008-09 Fulbright Awards

Six students from Oregon State University have received 2008-09 U.S. Student Fulbright awards, a record number for OSU. Established in 1946, the Fulbright Program is the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government and designed to “increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries.” The U.S. Student Fulbright Program offers merit-based fellowships to recent bachelor’s graduates, current master’s and doctoral students, young professionals and artists for study and research abroad, according to Marit Legler, the OSU Fulbright Program Advisor. Approximately 1,200 students—chosen for their leadership potential—are selected each year nationwide.

OSU to Graduate Largest Class, Honor Displaced WWII-era Students

Oregon State University will graduate the largest class in its history on Sunday, June 15, during the university’s 139th annual commencement ceremony beginning at 1 p.m. in Reser Stadium. It will be broadcast live on Oregon Public Broadcasting.

...Twenty-three former Oregon State students will receive honorary bachelor’s degrees. They are among the 42 students – all of Japanese ancestry – who were forced to leave the university during the early years of World War II after President Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066, which sent many of them to internment camps.

...Lori Chen, from Clackamas, is graduating after just three years with a 4.00 grade point average and a degree in human development and family science and a minor in Mandarin Chinese. Last summer she participated in a study abroad program in Angers, France, and she had two rigorous internships involving children, including a stint with an orphanage in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Her internships became life-changing experiences that solidified her interests in international adoption work with a long-term goal of opening her own orphanage.

Career as Healer Began with Hurricane

Fresh out of Roseburg High School in 1998 and volunteering with relief workers in Nicaragua amid the devastation wrought by Hurricane Mitch, John Roth decided on a career in medicine. Fluent in Spanish, he worked as a medical interpreter for health care teams dispatched by Mercy Ships, a global nondenominational Christian charity. "I was the voice between the doctors and the people, and I had to be very aware of how they interacted," Roth recalls. That role inspired him to become a physician assistant -- a profession with growing responsibilities in a health system facing the dual challenge of expanding access while containing costs. ... Roth graduated from Oregon State University with degrees in public health and international studies.

OSU Chamber Choir Presents President’s Concert, Heads to Germany

The Oregon State University Chamber Choir, directed by Steven M. Zielke, will finish its performance season with the fourth annual President’s Concert on Saturday, June 7, at 7:30 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 1165 N.W. Monroe St., Corvallis....Just days after this performance, the choir will leave for Germany, where it will perform seven concerts over 10 days in cities including Stuttgart, Freiburg, and Tübingen. The Chamber Choir will appear on the Friday Church Music Series at the Evangelische Stiftskirche of Stuttgart and perform at a gala concert commemorating the 40th anniversary of the Oregon–Baden Württemberg academic exchange program.
