Guest Speaker: Films, Fans and Adaptations: Twilight, Lord of the Rings, and Other Popular Fantasy Films

Tuesday October 30th, 4:00-5:30pm in the International Resource Center (IRC) just off the main lounge in the MU a guest speaker will discuss her work with literature and film and educational opportunities in the UK. Maggie Parke comes to us from Bangor, Wales (part of the United Kingdom). Oregon State and Bangor University are longstanding exchange partners, meaning that OSU students can pay their OSU tuition to study in Wales!

**************

What happens when a popular fantasy novel is adapted to the screen? How much influence should and do fans have in how the movie turns out? How can social media affect event film adaptation? How can you work in the film industry? What are the advantages of studying in the UK for your graduate degree (not just in film– in all disciplines!)? Maggie Parke, a PhD candidate at Bangor University in Wales, International Officer for Bangor University, and Head of Development for Elfin Productions, will discuss her research on the sets of Twilight, Captain America, and the Academy Award shortlisted short: Love at First Sight. Her degree focuses on the adaptation of popular fantasy films (Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Hunger Games, and the Twilight films) and also the opportunities of education abroad in the UK.
