The Fulbright Program is the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government and is designed to “increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries.” With this goal as a starting point, the Fulbright Program has provided almost 310,000 participants—chosen for their academic merit and leadership potential — with the opportunity to study, teach and conduct research, exchange ideas and contribute to finding solutions to shared international concerns. The Fulbright Scholar Program offers teaching, research or combination teaching/research awards in over 125 countries each academic year.
Dr. Ma. Carmen Ablan-Lagman (De La Salle University)
Dr. Ablan, an Associate Professor and Coordinator in the Biology Department at De La Salle University in Manila, Philippines, a government Centre of Excellence in biology. She is an affiliate of the Shields Ocean Research Center (SHORE) of the College of Science and Head of the Biodiversity Unit of the Centre for Natural Science and Environment Research (CENSER) at DLSU. Her interests are in the study of genetic diversity and population structure of marine organisms and their implications to the management of coral reefs and associated aquaculture and fisheries in the Philippines and other Asia Pacific regions. Dr. Ablan-Lagman is at OSU to work on assembling the transcriptome and studing variability in gene expression in response to temperature stress, in the mud crab Scylla serrata. She will be at the Department of Zoology working with Dr. Eli Meyer. This work will open new avenues for gene expression research and maybe genetic improvement of the mud crabs, a very valuable aquaculture species in the Philippines. It will also help develop research programs on gene expression and adaptation of other marine organism.
