Catania, Sicily, is the REAL Italy. Removed from the tourist crowds, and at the heart of one of Italy’s most traditional regions, Catania offers you an opportunity to immerse yourself in the culture and language of this amazing Mediterranean island. Ancient temples, bustling marketplaces, ornate churches, winding mazes of streets, and above all, friendly people will provide an amazing environment for a summer of learning and exploring. Sicily has been the crossroads between Europe and Africa since ancient times, and so this course will also involve a five-day trip to Tunisia, less than 100 miles away by sea. Here students will be introduced to modern North African culture, and encounter first-hand a culture distinct from Europe, but connected in many ways. This time in Tunisia will help to bring home the historic close connection between Italy and North Africa through visits to the ancient city of Carthage, and time spent in mosques, medinas (markets) and meeting with Tunisian students.

The Sicily summer program offers a unique opportunity to begin or continue your Italian language study, while learning about the ancient and modern cultures of Italy. Language learning is paired with two thematic classes, which immerse students in the heritage of Sicily, and the life of its people in the modern era. These classes have been specially developed to maximize exposure to all that Sicily has to offer, and to help students understand this rich and complex culture.

SAS: Semester At Sea

Program Administrator:
Semester at Sea
Country:
Multiple Countries
Host Institution:

Semester at Sea is a pioneer and leader in global, comparative education—a form of international study that focuses on surveying the world's peoples, patterns, cultures, and traditions. Global, comparative education is the element that distinguishes Semester at Sea from other study abroad programs. Operating a traveling shipboard campus allows diverse learning communities to live and learn in close quarters as they travel the world, and SAS provides opportunities for intensive engagement, reflection, interaction, and exchange that simply aren't available with other programs. Field-based, experiential learning is a vital component of Semester at Sea. The ship becomes a campus where participants study in a traditional setting, while the world is transformed into an academic laboratory where students earn 20% of their grade. Field Labs are designed and led by a faculty member who has expertise in a particular culture, location, or subject matter. These in-port labs enhance and explore course content. SAS directed trips are led by staff or faculty. May be recommended by a faculty member as an excellent complement to a student's syllabus. Independent Practica are opportunities for a participant to conduct independent research. Requires faculty approval to count as fulfillment of field requirement. Semester at Sea is proud to be sponsored by the University of Virginia, one of the nation's most prestigious institutions of higher education. Founded by Thomas Jefferson in 1819, the University sustains the ideal of developing leaders who are well-prepared to help shape the future of the nation.

Location:

Classes and residences are on board the MV Explorer, a 590-foot ship made into a floating campus. There are seven decks, student residences, dining halls, a library, recreational facilities, and more. Check out the Semester at Sea website for more information!

AHA

The AHA Center is located in a 17th century Palazza, within the medieval city walls of the university hill town of Macerata, just around the corner from Macerata’s Museum of Contemporary Art.  The center offers wireless access and a modest computer lab for students, a spacious studio and frescoed classrooms, as well as a small lending and reference library across from the Piazzo Vittorio Vineto, where part of the weekly market is held.  Surrounded by soaring medieval towers and Gothic architecture, Macerata and the Marche region offer countless opportunities to serve as your classroom, including excursions to the Arena Sferisterio, the Teatro “Lauro Rossi”, tours through the Roman ruins in Urbs Salvia, a visit to the 12th Century Abbazia di Chiaravalle di Fiastra, and the markets and beaches of Civitanova.

Location:

Surrounded by Romanesque, Renaissance, and Baroque architecture on a hilltop between the Chienti and Potenza rivers, Macerata is located in central Italy, a short drive from the Adriatic coast. The Art Studio program is designed for art majors or minors or for students who have completed previous Art course work.  Courses are held in a 17th century Palazzo Ricci in the center of the medieval walled city, perched atop the university hill town of Macerata.  Every other year, students will attend the Venice Biennale, one of the most influential cultural institutions in the world, as part of their course work.  In addition, students will explore Macerata and the surrounding Marche region for historic and modern inspirations. The studio and classrooms in the AHA Macerata Center are adorned with frescoes and unique architectural details accompanied by the modern comforts of wi-fi.  The contemporary art collection of the Pinacoteca di Arte Italiana di Palazzo Ricci is located in the same Palazzo as the AHA Center with a separate location just around the corner, providing additional insight and inspiration. Macerata is only 30 minutes by bus or train to the Adriatic coast, where students can relax under the Italian summer sun at the beaches of Civitanova.

Located in the region of Tuscany, Florence has long been described as a "flower" or a "pomegranate tree," bringing to mind images of fertility, lush new life, and beauty. Florence is situated on the banks of the Arno River, surrounded by hills of rolling Italian countryside. To study and live in florence is to walk the streets of Dante, Brunelleschi, Giotto, and many more contributors to the arts and humanities.
