Conditionally Admitted Program
Students who have been admitted under the Conditional Admission Program (based on English language proficiency) must attend the Conditional Admission Orientation prior to the beginning of the term. The date of the orientation will be listed in the CAP information letter you receive upon admission. You will not be able to register or begin classes without attending the orientation.

Applicants who meet the University's academic and financial requirements, but who do not meet the minimum TOEFL requirement, may be offered conditional admission. This enables students to increase their language proficiency through study in OSU's English Language Institute (ELI) while possibly taking academic courses. The terms of this program are as follows:

Common Questions about the Conditional Admission Program From Prospective Students:
* I've been notified that I'm in the CAP. What happens when I arrive at OSU?
You are required to attend the CAP Orientation (date, time and location will vary depending on the term you have been admitted)
* May I take OSU classes if I have a score of 450-499,133-170, 45-49 on the TOEFL?
No. You must attend the ELI full-time until you receive a score of 500, 173, 60
* What happens if I'm admitted to OSU with a TOEFL score of 450-499,133-170, 45-59 and then achieve a higher score before I start my program at OSU?
Please notify OSU of your higher score. If you have a score of 500-549, 173-210, 60-79, you will be eligible to take a combination of ELI and OSU classes.
* If my score on the TOEFL is 550,213, 80 do I remain in CAP?
iBT for Graduate students requires a minimum score of 18 in each of the four component tests in addition to the overall score of 80. iBT for undergraduate students requires a minimum score of 16 in each of the four component tests in addition to the overall score of 80. If you meet the university requirement on the TOEFL test your status will change from a conditional to a regular admitted student.
* If my score on the TOEFL is 547,210, 79 do I remain in CAP?
Yes, OSU requires a 550, 213, 80 minimum. Any score below 550, 213, 80 (iBT with scores below 16 or 18 in any subscore will require you to remain in CAP)
* How many classes can I take at OSU and the ELI?
Undergraduate and Post-baccalaureate students will enroll for a combination of coursework at OSU and ELI for a total of 15 hours. Graduate students will enroll for a combination at OSU and ELI for a total of 12 hours. The number of classes taken at OSU and ELI depends on the TOEFL score you receive. The higher the score, the more OSU classes you may take.
* How do I pay for the ELI and OSU?
CAP students with TOEFL scores of 450-499, 133-170, 45-59 will receive a bill for tuition from the ELI. CAP students with TOEFL scores of 500-549, 173-210, 60-79 will receive a bill for tuition from the OSU Office of Business Affairs that will reflect full-time non-resident OSU tuition. The Business Affairs office will divide the tuition between the ELI and OSU.
* How do I register?
CAP students are admitted with a HOLD on their registration. In order to register CAP students must attend the CAP Orientation prior to the academic term. ELI registration is done in person and OSU registration is done on the web. You must attend registration at the designated time and place and meet with a CAP advisor. OSU registration may be done on the web after you have met with you academic advisor.
Students who fail their English language courses due to lack of attendance or effort, and students who knowingly do not follow the requirements of the Conditional Admission Program will not be allowed to register at OSU. If you do not demonstrate progress in English language proficiency, this could result in denial of regular admission to or dismissal from OSU.For more information on the language programs, please visit the English Language Institute (ELI) website.
