OREGON STATE UNIVERSITY

Step 5: Once You Are In the U.S.

Immigration

The Department of State has regulations regarding how to maintain your J-1 visa status. As long as you continually meet these obligations, you will be considered in status or "maintaining your visa status". International Student Advising and services (ISAS) is a comprehensive international office serving international students. The staff in ISAS are available to assist you with maintaining your status; however, it is your responsibility to know the regulations that apply to you. Please follow the links below to learn more about the rules and requirements of maintaining your immigration status.

Orientation

At the beginning of each term, INTO OSU and International Student Advising and Services (ISAS) hold a mandatory orientation program for new international students. This program is designed to provide you with valuable information and facilitate your transition to OSU. All newly admitted international students are required to attend orientation and the immigration document check-in. If you do not attend both, International Student Advising and Services will place a HOLD on your account that may prevent you from registering.

To cover the cost of orientation, all degree and exchange students will be charged an orientation fee of $35 (winter and spring terms) or $50 (fall term). This fee will be automatically charged to your OSU student account.

Please see the International Studnet Orientation website to learn more about the mandatory orientation.

Contact: intl.orientation@oregonstate.edu

Note *International Student Orientation is usually scheduled during the week before the beginning of classes.

*Once you have obtained the J-1 visa, you may enter the US up to 30 days before your program start date (your program start date is listed as item #3 of your DS-2019 form).

*Students who were approved to live on-campus are eligible to move into their on-campus accommodations one day prior to the start of International Student Orientation. If you plan to arrive in Corvallis prior to the move-in date, please make sure to arrange for short-term housing.

Billing

Each Exchange Agreement specifies charges an exchange student is responsible to pay. Once you create an ONID account you will be able to view your OSU charges. It is your responsibility to review this account for accuracy. Please notify the contact below if you suspect that inaccurate charges have been billed to you.

Visit the Business Affairs page to find useful information about your billing statement, making payments, and payment deadlines:

Note: *Please remember that some exchange agreements do not cover mandatory and/or course-related fees. These fees will display on your billing account.
