Exon-Intron Splicing Patterns

Four patterns of alternative RNA splicing that have been observed. In each case a single type of RNA transcript is spliced in two alternative ways to produce two distinct mRNAs (1 and 2). The black boxes represent RNA sequences retained in BOTH mRNAs; colored boxes represent included in only ONE of the mRNAs. Intron sequences are indicated by the dashed lines. The bend lines indicate exons joined during splicing.
