DNA polymerase slippage during replication of DNA containing repeated sequences. During DNA replication (or repair synthesis), one strand transiently dissociates from the other and then reanneals in a misaligned configuration. If the mismatched bases are located in the primer strand (as shown), continued elongation results in an increased tract length. If the unpaired bases are located in the template strand, one of the tracts would contain a deletion.
