AN EDUCATIONAL RESOURCE SITE
FOR TEACHERS and ESL STUDENTSOur group "20 as 1" was given the task of finding out why the drop out rate in Oregon is so high for Latino and African Americans? Over the course of five days our group actively listened to stakeholders from the top of the educational ladder to the bottom, legislators, superintendents, principals, teachers, students parents and community advocates. The message was loud and clear, Oregon's educational system breaks down at the top of the ladder! Not enough money, poor assessment practices, not enough resources or curriculum materials...ultimately our education with or without the resources has been left up to the teachers who are overworked and underpaid. Oregon needs more spanish speaking teachers and teachers of color. My message to college students that are prospective teachers is to take a long, hard look at our public school system. Know that you will be the key to student success. The skills that you bring with you to the classroom must also include warmth, care, creativity, and a willingness to find ways and opportunities for all student success. Learn the language of your students and encourage them to use it to build their skills on and teach other students about cultural differences and likenesses. Share to learn!
