Cross Cultural Issues in Education

Throughout this intense procedure of listening
to 21 diverse speakers, I learned that my most
important job would be to listen. Every stakeholder
we spoke with had very strong opinions about the
education system in Oregon.

Larry McMurray, superintendent of the Salem-Keizer
school district informed us that there is only one
cultural program in his district of 35,000 students.
Salem-Keizer is the second largest school district
state, and it's disproportionate amount of Anglo-
American teachers is alarming. McMurray said that
the teachers are not prepared to deal with such

levels of diversity and feel that they are not trained
well enough to do so.

Ataa Akyeampong is the spokesperson from the
OSU Educational Opportunities Program.  She spoke
highly of encouraging students to become involved
a cultural center or some other form of support,
especially for minority students, even on the college
level.
