Beeghley Chapter 5
Race/Ethnicity and Stratification

pp. 103-104
Make sure you know the difference between prejudice and discrimination, and be able to use these concepts correctly in a statement about causes of racial/ethnic inequality. Similarly, know the difference between "race" and "ethnicity."

pp. 104-110
Here Beeghley outlines some of the historical and contemporary patterns of racial and ethnic stratification. Know the main points of this section, and keep them
in mind when comparing this to the material in chapter 4.

Also, think about why "stratification" might be more appropriate than "inequality" when discussing racial and ethnic differences in power, income, occupation, etc.

pp. 111-112
See if you can summarize briefly the consequences of racial and ethnic inequality that he identifies.  (Again, it will be useful to think about how these are different from the consequences identified for women, and to be able to give a short explanation for why the difference or why the similarities.)

pp. 113-117
Think about this section in terms of the bold sub-headings. That is, think about why does this material fit under a sub-title about "The Individual and Racial and Ethnic Stratification".

pp. 117-126
Similarly, how does the material in these pages illustrate how "Social Structure" influences racial and ethnic stratification?  Notice here that he calls upon several major influences that we have considered - industrialization, class reproduction, institutionalized discrimination.
