Thank you for taking the time to complete these two web-based
tutorials for Sociology 426/526.
The first tutorial walks students through the common, but by
no
means commonly understood, process of isolating the effects of
one sociological variable on another. This tutorial is designed
to help you understand what we mean when we say that we have
controlled for a variable and it should help you make better sense
of the many tables that you find in typical articles in sociology
journals.
The second tutorial gives you the experience of creating and
interpreting a special kind of table which sociologists use to
examine issues of social mobility.
I recommend that you complete both tutorials at one sitting,
but if
you cannot, you may stop after you finish the "Controlling
for
Variables" tutorial, and later return to finish the "Mobility
Tables" tutorial. Total time should be under 45 minutes.

tutorial.
