Ethnic
Studies 499/599: Learning Through Listening, Spring Break Trip 2006
Rural Substainability:
In Harney County, Oregon
Reflection:
There
is a nice museum, but where is the
business even if small to get
people to stay a while and spend
money that can be funneled into community
programs and support the continued growth and education of the community
Reflection:
Keeping
the community informed of local issues and how the may affect them is imperative for community support and
action.
Ignorance of situations is a
factor to a society that leads to lack of community motivation as a whole.
Reflection: Does
living in a single wide or doublewide make who you are? How a community looks has nothing to do with the
overall community unity. The
negativity of one outward attitude of a community can overall affect the whole aspect. So, I
say that the overall community bond and
family relationship in a community is
what adds to its decline or incline both financially
and sociologically.
Reflection:
Is
everyone a drunk here? What the History?
Everyone wants to leave or give
up on this community that holds the leadership roles.
How can
the developing minds see this? I believe that answers itself. Get locals qualified
to hold these positions and promote education and growth in the community? Are all the
people just outcasts from
somewhere or building a resume.
Much more can be said for the positive
influence an individual has made in
their tenure rather than the tenure alone. Again I will
reiterate how negative attitude and lack of goal setting leads
to
total community feeling and outlook.

Economic
Substainability:
The
economic sustainability of rural towns in the united
States,
is one that is subject to the attitudes, beliefs, and
Commitments
groups and individuals who are willing to make
toward
Community goals, economic development, community pride,
and an Optimistic
outlook for the future that will be
inhabited by
there
Descendants, their own children.
Athletics
is often the Corner stone that brings a community together
and helps them Realize a
potential
of greatness. Wouldn’t it be grand
if
we could Carry that attitude over to some of the bigger
community
Builders in rural America.
I
do commend those who Have went off, got an education and come back to serve
the community
that gave them the opportunity, and support
to reach goals. In a town
such as burns
I realize the
failures out weigh
the successes. But
there in lies a possible
solution we
are Creating a job market and it is
directly
under our noses. Through Grants
and
other sources and volunteers you start
making the Community aware of its current
condition and where it is heading.
And further more you hire a team of goal oriented
people from Within
the community and
educate them on the things that are
Available
to young American and Indians in ways of training
Programs
education and the world in general.
