Education
The potential closure of the Siletz school is a deep concern to the citizens of the community. There is a feeling that the possible closure will effect the sense of place a local school provides for youth, in addition to disrupting the community as a whole.
The state of education is a common theme in both the tribal and non-tribal communities. The failure of Measure 28 and others of its kind are looked upon as abandonment of the youth and communities of Oregon.
The tribal youth face an alarming and continuing disenfranchisement of education. There are barriers of entry due to a lack of understanding, and barriers of exit due to a fear of non-acceptance in the community when returning.
Native students
are faced with the common assumption that they will not be going on to
higher education. Also, while in school, natives often are not tested
for learning disabilities. Once they overcome these obstacles, students
are faced with the "sexy trend" of acculturation, and are intimidated by
the shock of going into an anonymous environment.
