Cross Cultural Issues In Environmental Justice:
Learning Through Listening
Spring Break 2004 Arec/ Ethnic Studies /Sociology Field Course 499
By Amanda D. Wollmann

The definition of environmental justice is from Environmental Justice Action Group (EJAG).
The fair treatment and meaningful involvement of all people
regardless of race, color, national origin, or income with respect to the development,
implementation, and enforcement of environmental laws, regulations, and policies.
Fair treatment means that no group of people, including racial, ethnic, or socioeconomic group
should bear a disproportionate share of the negative environmental consequences
resulting from industrial, municipal, and commercial operations
or the execution of federal, state, local, and tribal programs and policies.

EPA's Office of Environmental Justice

My definition of Environmental Justice is equal rights for all people incuding people of color
and the poor. Someone out their has to be an advocated to them to help
them get the same rights as everyone else in this world. It should matter what color of skin you have or how
much money you have, because everyone should be able to have a health life
not be sick with asthma or even have lead poison.

"OUR LEARNING ENVIRONMENT"

WHAT I HAVE LEARNED IN THIS CLASS?

· Different definition of environmental justices.

·How the Slietz tribe using the sea otter

·How to work in a team.

·The medical problem that certain groups have because of where they live.

·The pollution problem.

·The polices for the fishing industries

·How the land is development

·How they plan the Natural Resources

·Farmer issues with their land

·How the reporter for the news channels focus on the environmental justice issues

·Finally about the moral and ethics about environmental justices.

I personal would have to say that I learned a lot from these different stakeholders
and would recommend this course to any that would like to take and learn
about Environmental Justices. I think that it is a great topic and need to be taught more
to people. I feel that some people are on aware that we have a problem with environmental justice.
Also some don't even know what they word me. I hope after reading this page
you will have a better understand what environmental justice is and who it effects.
Even know the class is long hours you get educated on important things that effect you and your family.

This is Dr. Lani Roberts Environmental ethics and justice. She is also
Environmental Philosophy. In the middle of the picture holding
the award from the class. Believe that everyone should talk a part of getting involved with
the issues of environmental justice.

This is Protocol for Assessing Community Excellence in Environmental Health (Pace-eh).
In the middle of the picture holding award is Kevin Odell and Charles Bishop.
They received the award from the class for getting involved with Environmental Justice
and taking time to help our class understand what Environmental Justice means.
Kevin and Charles talked about where health issues. The things are to have better health
for all people, which mean to have clean air. I am showing so things
that they talked about when they came to our class.

We need to have clean air so we don't have all these medical problem.
As we learn from our stakeholders Charles, Kevin and Jeri that we
have a lot of health issues. What are we going to do about?
How can we get involved to change what is happening.?

This is Environmental Justice Action Group (Ejag).
Jeri Sundvall is standing in the middle of the class in the back
by Tiffany Smith and Duke Oliver Jr. Feel it is her job to make
a difference in Portland, Oregon.Change the problem with
environmental Justices issues in ther cities where her families lives.
Feel some has to make a difference. Is tried of yound children
getting sick with asthma and lead. Need to do something about.
Famous question that she ask the people that she deal with.
"What can I do for you", not what I can do for myself.
It about them and their neighbor. I am there advocated
to making things happen in their community.

Who is effect by these problem? Why don't you
take a mintue to think about that?
All people are really effected by the problem
but the most important things is people
of color and poor people that can't
afford to move out of the place
that they live in. What are you going
to do about it? Do something about it!
Get involved with the city that you live in!

There is a message here in this picture. We need to fouces
on the present and the future of our children. The
government official that make decision where
environmental justices issues are concerns. Need to started
care about what happen in their other people neighbor, and
stopping have an attitudies if it "not in my backyard" Jeri Sundvall.
I don't have a problem with it. I strongly believe
that our government official have a lot to do with the
decision making on where things go, and they
can make a difference in our neighbors. I feel if they
had any kinds of moral value they would think
about the children, friend children, and grandchildren
and what they are doing to their futures.
