Thinking and Problem Solving

Diversity Among Students

Course Description

This module examines the application side of Learning Theory & Human Development ; i.e. Thinking & Problem Solving. In the process we will look at some practical applications of the various learning theories, some discussions of which is most appropriate for various subjects, and ongoing research in the field of "multiple intelligences".

Course Content

  • Instructional techniques that promote critical thinking and problem solving.
  • Techniques & Activities that encourage divergent as well as convergent thinking.
  • Documentation of understanding and ability to apply knowledge of developmental psychology.
  • Application of strategies for learning appropriate to students in grades 5-10 and/or grades 7-12.
  • Examination and consideration of thinking and problem solving within the cultural and community context of the cooperating school districts.

Capstone Activity

This activity contains the results of careful examination of the elements of problem solving and critical thinking through various resources. Application will be made of reflections upon this examination applying insights resulting from observations of teaching in the classroom by mentor/supervisor and others in the educational setting.

An analysis will be made which describes methods and strategies addressing thinking and on what levels. Included will be a description of teaching and learning strategies observed which were especially useful, meaningful, and successful to/for the learners and why. From the above analyses should come a critical examination and elaboration on those teaching methods and strategies which you believe would best facilitate higher order thinking and problem solving abilities, and why.
