Learning Theory and Human Development

Diversity Among Students

Course Description

Theories of Learning & Human Development focus on three important perspectives in human cognitive development which are the foundation of present-day theories:

  • cognitive development as physical growth
  • cognitive development as sensory experience, and
  • cognitive development as schema formation.

This one credit module will guide you through a discussion of each of these focus areas with an examination of the specific importance as well as the overall importance each plays in human cognition and theories of learning. You will then have the opportunity to reflect upon each of these vital areas and examine how each needs to be addressed in your practicum setting.

You will also have the opportunity to integrate this information into your own knowledge base, and experience its application in your classroom. A Capstone project utilizing what you have learned, as well as usage of mastery application skills for your practicum serve as the culmination of this learning experience.

Course Content

  • Determining content, skills, and processes that will assist students in accomplishing desired unit outcomes.
  • Designing learning activities that lead to students' mastery.
  • Adapting unit and lesson plans for exceptional learners.
  • Applying organizational structures appropriate for the development level of students.
  • Implementing instructional plans which use a variety of research-based educational practices that reflect how students learn, are sensitive to individual differences.
  • Understanding and ability to apply knowledge of developmental psychology and learning appropriate to all students.

Capstone Activity

Develop a hypothetical lesson, or use a lesson already in use in your practicum. Identify within it those areas where cognitive development as physical growth, sensory experience, and schema formation plays an important role; explicating why this is so. How has this lesson accommodated each of these important factors?
