NOTE: This course has been replaced in the PTE Program by the 2 credit ED518: Civil Rights in Education

The Scales of Justice

Course Description

The passage of the Civil Rights Act (1964), followed by legislation addressing the special needs and interests of students such as Title IX (1972), have had a tremendous impact on Education. Also more recently passage of state and federal initiatives relative to educational reform, and performance assessment for students and teachers have added to the maze of legislation regarding educational licensure, practicum, and assessment of the efficacy of the educational system to prepare students for lifelong learning as well as to prepare them for a work life of transformational learning. These laws and initiatives provide educators with the power to re-dress or enforce educationally democratic practices and assessments. This one credit module will lead you through a discussion of some of these issues which you might find enlightening to consider.

Facilitating this examination will be links to resources which will aid you in your reflection and your learning experience. You will have the opportunity to integrate this information into your own knowledge base, and make application to your practicum. A Capstone project utilizing what you have learned, as well as usage of mastery application skills for your practicum serve as the culmination of this learning experience.

Course Content

Law is one area of inquiry which most professional educators choose not to deal with. However, there are a myriad of laws which have been enacted over the past twenty years which directly effect us in our classrooms. Some of these are laws requiring increased accessibilty such as the Americans with Disabilities Act. Some are laws relating to the future direction of education, such as Goals 2000. Others relate to the safety of our students and ourselves while we're on school grounds.

Most of us willingly or unwillingly have had reason to review, discuss, become knowledgeable about, or deal directly with law of some type; whether administrative, or criminal, local or federal.

Capstone Activity

You will be describing and researching a relevant law which relates to a recent experience that you have had in an educational environment where you had to become concerned about a law or know about what a law required. You will examine the resource web-links and find a law which applies to the situation you describe. After reflecting upon the law and the situation, you will be directed to think about ways the law was applied, could have been applied, or should have been applied. Or ways that it should not have been applied. You will discuss all these facets of the particular law relative to the situation you are describing, and the result of your reflection will be entered into a Discussion Forum as a capstone for this module.
