Course Description
This course examines diversity among students in K-12 learning environments. Students will explore diversity and its impacts on teaching and learning. Students will address issues related to multiculturalism, linguistic backgrounds, racial justice, students of color, gender equity, socioeconomic status, students with disabilities, and intellectual diversity. A Capstone project utilizing all that you have learned and the results of your reflections serve as the culmination of this learning experience.
Course Content
- Affirming the dignity and worth of all students, and their families and cultures.
- Providing positive support for all learners.
- Applying principles of gender equality and racial justice.
- Applying principles of least restrictive environments for students with disabilities.
- Establishing and maintaining classroom rules and procedures, taking into account the influence of the physical, social, and emotional climates of students’ homes and the community on motivation and behavior.
- Applying organizational structures appropriate for the development level of students, including individual and group instruction and cooperative learning groups.
- Resolving conflicts in a positive manner, respecting the cultural context of the community.
Capstone Activity
The capstone task for this module will provide evidence that you are capable of considering the needs of diverse learners. Give serious thought to how you will affirm the dignity and worth of ALL students in your practicum setting.
Respond to the following questions on the module discussion forum: How can you, as a student teacher, promote equity and affirm the dignity and worth of ALL students in your practicum setting? How can you actively consider factors outside of the classroom, such as parents and the cultural context of the community in affirming these students?
