STAGE  9:  VIEW FROM THE TOP

By now we have met and mastered the derivative and the skill of differentiation. In Stages 7 and 8 these skills were put to use in the study of qualitative properties of Field Guide functions. Properties such as monotonicity, concavity, and extreme values can be studied through intelligent use of the derviatives of a function.

The optimization problems that you studied in Stage 8 comprise just one class of applications for our new found knowledge and skill. In Stage 9 we investigate two more types of applications.

Objectives

• Set up and solve related rates problems.
• Use the derivatives to determine linear and quadratic approximations of functions.
