Deadlines and the "What's Next?" Page

The amount of time you have to complete CalculusQuest^TM depends on how and where you are receiving credit for the course. But in most situations you will have a deadline for the completion of all ten Stages. The course does not progress in lock step as a classroom course does, but you are required to keep up a pace consistent with finishing the course in the allotted time.

To insure that the course moves along, your instructor has set deadlines for the completion of various activities. These deadlines usually include some slack, so you should endeavor to complete graded activities comfortably in advance of the deadlines.

One of the most useful aids made available to you is the What's Next? page, which can be accessed from the CQ Resource page. It lists all of the Onward and Upward activities from the course and indicates which ones you have completed and which ones have impending deadlines. Go take a look at it. We recommend checking the What's Next page sometime during each CQ session.

Mailing Lists and Discussion Groups

If you go to the Resource page you will see a link to the "Communication Center". This center makes it easy for you to send email to your instructors and also to any class mailing lists which have been set up.

There might also be HyperNews pages for the class. These are pages which allow threaded discussions around class themes.

Making progress boils down to the "three R's":

Reading: The Lesson pages contain a wealth of material. Whether you read them first, last, or in small chunks, read the Lesson pages carefully.
Writing: One of the very best ways to learn mathematics is to communicate mathematics. CalculusQuest^TM offers many opportunities to do so. Take advantage of them all.
Arithmetic: A large part of Calculus is about calculation. Getting the correct answer is important. To gain this ability, it is necessary to work through the examples in the Lesson pages and Practice area thoroughly and slowly, stopping when you don't understand a step. It takes self-discipline
- to avoid skipping right to the answer,
- to not ask for help unless you have tried hard a few times yourself,
- to seek out help when you have, and
- to not believe that you know something just because you want to know it.
CalculusQuest^TM is designed to put as little temptation as possible in the way of this self-discipline, but it will still fail without effort on your part to be an honest learner.
