Stage 1: Gearing Up.

CalculusQuest is an expedition to the top of a mythical mountain located somewhere in Oregon. Thanks for joining us! The climb looks to be steady but pleasant, and we are looking forward to getting acquainted as we work our way up the slope. Let's go over a few basics before we get started.

Our climb will be divided into ten Stages, listed in the CalculusQuest^TM Directory. Stage 1 teaches the ins and outs of navigating and using CalculusQuest^TM material. We will learn what the buttons do and how the windows work, find out how to get help, and practice our skills by browsing the Field Guide to Functions.

In each stage there are three places to go:

HINT: Whenever words look like this they do something. They are usually links, which take you to another page, but sometimes they do other things.

• The Lesson
  • This is where the mathematics is explained.
  • Lessons play the role of lectures, reading, and note-taking in a traditional course.
  • Many Lesson pages are interactive, but nothing from a Lesson is recorded as part of your grade.
  • Each Lesson starts with a hub which helps you navigate and focus on learning objectives.

• The Practice Area
  • The Practice Areas contain problems and activities which help you check and solidify your understanding.
  • The Practice area plays the roles of homework and laboratories in a more traditional course.
  • All problems in the Practice area have links to answers. Some have links to more detailed explanations.
  • No Practice Area materials are used for grading purposes.
  • The Practice area starts with an index in the form of a hub.

• Onward and Upward
  • Activities in the "onward and upward" area form the basis of your grade. These activities now reside in Blackboard! Completing them is the only requirement for making progress and receiving credit for CalculusQuest^TM.
  • Activities include in-person tests (to be taken in a proctored lab), on-line tests, essays, and communication activities.
  • The "onward and upward" area starts with a hub which lists and gives a synopsis of each activity.
