GERMAN 341, 342, 343: COURSE GOALS

German 341, 342, and 343 is a beginning literature course in which students read German texts, listen to lectures, discuss lectures and texts in German and English, and write in German. It is designed to help students reach several goals:

  1. To learn what literature is;
  2. To learn about the forms of literature (genres);
  3. To learn about literary movements and texts against the backdrop of the times in which they were written; and
  4. To improve German language skills, especially reading, but also listening, writing, and speaking. To facilitate reaching this goal, the language of instruction is generally German. Some English is spoken in discussions and lectures, but an intermediate knowledge of German is required.
