WEB Resources for ED 419
|
Web Resources are sites on the web that I have found.
I am always interested in other useful sites and will add them if you share
them with me. The Sites are divided into three categories:
"Distance Education " leads to Oregon State University Valley Library tutorials
on how to use the library from a distance and much more. "Hubs" lead to
many web sites off campus or out-of-state. "Destinations" usually have
specific useful material, but will probably also lead to other sites.
Skim the list, the last is my favorite. Don't miss the starred
links.*
Distance Education Support:
Distance Education Librarian
Paula McMillen is the Distance Education Librarian. This link
describes her role in your learning.
Bridging the
Distance
This link describes the Valley Library Support Services available for
Distance Education Students.
Hubs:
Team
Project Web Links *
In Spring 1998, one team put together a web site with links to areas
of interest in multicultural education. The links on this site are
often changed; the list has value, but use with caution.
Multicultural
Education and the Internet *
Multicultural Education and the Internet is part of the Multicultural
Pavilion Internet Project from the University of Virginia. This site
from their school of education is written by Paul Gorski and contains many
useful connections and insights.
Teacher
Talk -- For Secondary Teachers
Teacher Talk is published by the Center for Adolescent Studies
at the School of Education, Indiana University, Bloomington,IN. It is a
publication for preservice and secondary education teachers that exists
as a series of World Wide Web documents. Anyone is welcome to use these
resources as long as they indicate that the article or lesson plan is a
part of Teacher Talk which belongs to Indiana University.
Valley Library
Cultural Awareness Page
This page gives links to some of the material in Valley Library on
diversity issues. You may find good links to many other resources
in the library from here.
Eisenhower National Clearinghouse
Funded by the U.S. Department of Education, this site ams to be a compreshensive
resource (both Web and otherwise) for K-12 math and science teachers.
Virtually everything you want to know about innovative teaching methods
and field developments are here, including, for the practical teachers
among us, complete sets of activities and lesson plans. I have included
this resource as part of ED 419 because OSU has an Eisenhower grant to
help us develop preservice teacher skills working with a diverse student
population. The site has some connections for such strategies.
Destinations:
Web of Culture
This site is for the business community, but has useful information
for cross-cultural communications of other kinds. The Mission Statement:
"The Web of Culture seeks to inform business professionals on the topic
of cross-cultural communications. If you are planning to conduct business
with a foreign counterpart, The Web of Culture should be your first stop
of your journey to cultural success! "
Eric
Digest Multicultural Article
This article, "Varieties of Multicultural Education: An Introduction,"
by Gary Burnett, begins to indicate the complexity and wide scope of this
topic. It connects to abstracts of books and articles by some of
the major players in the field of multicultural education like Banks, Sleeter,
Nieto.
Resegration
in the Public Schools
This 37 page report about resegration in the nation's public
schools is disturbing to say the least. Links to other useful information.
Teaching
Immigrant and Migrant Children
Short article with specific suggestions working with immigrant and
migrant children. Most of the suggestions would work with any group
of children!
Dissertation
on Racial Identity Development
I found this while surfing once and although I have not read it, it
is interesting to know that such research is out there. This could
be read (in part or whole) as a contribution to our class annotated bibliography.
Racial and Gender Identity Development in White Male Multicultural
and Diversity Educators and Facilitators: Toward Individual Processes
of Self-development.
ABSTRACT:
This study was conducted to examine the white identity development
and male identity development of white males involved in multicultural
teaching and facilitating. Narrative data was collected from four white
males, including the researcher, to address three issues:
1) the experiences instrumental in the participant's immersion into
multicultural work,
2) the participant's white identity development and process for self-examination,
and
3) the participant's male identity development and process for self-examination.
Princeton
Course on Native and African American Writings 1820-1995
This is probably the strangest link I will put on this page.
I wish my web course looked like this. (This isn't Princeton, either).
Anyway, the list of readings from this course may be of interest to some
of you.
Images
of the African American Holocaust
A friend of mine sent this site with this note, "Here's an excellent
website from a professor at San Diego State University that you may want
to use with 419 students. I just went through the African American
Holocaust link and it was emotionally wrenching. I almost didn't send this
to you, but I know that you're all too aware of anything you would see
there."
Quotes of the Day
This site displays selections from a monster collection of quotations.
The one I happened upon was my favorite a month ago, "No matter how cynical
you get, it is impossible to keep up." From Lily Tomlin.
