4. Children should be allowed to investigate, in depth, areas
in which they are greatly interested, and should be encouraged to do original,
creative work and to purposely investigate real problems.
An additional Cartoon:
Imagine a classroom from the end of the 19th century. The teacher,
wearing a ruffled collar and a long skirt, has a pointer in her hand and
a stern look of displeasure on her face. In front of her two small
boys in old-fashioned clothes are running around out of their seats playing
with small airplanes. She says, "Wilbur, Orville, stop that this
instant!" Ah, the Wright brothers providing a "challenge" for their
teacher. I have had groups of educators brainstorm how the teacher
may have encouraged the behavior instead of squelching it. The suggestions
ranged from a field trip to their father's bike shop, to a paper airplane
making project and a fly-off at recess, to a demonstration of their skills
for the whole class at an appropriate time. What might Tom's
teacher above do to encourage appropriate directions for his "charge"?
Reality:
What passing or sustained interests may lead to a career? A parent
I know did not value the Legoª building skills of her child.
Nevertheless he became an architectural engineer, building bridges and
following his passion in spite of her not providing expanded opportunities
to create and build. Many individuals have been misunderstood
by those who saw their gifts as deficits or failed to see a gift at all.
The short list Who
are the Gifted? illustrates this point.
ED 419 Parallel:
The exploration for this rule is a review of a research article in
the area of your interest. Link to Librarian Paula McMillan's
page created for this assignment. The form for this review will
be the same as for the one associated with Rule Three:
The review should begin with a reference in APA format, include a one sentence
description of the item and the reason you choose the piece. At the
end list five questions you have for either the author or the producer
or the audience. When this is completed, copy your review into an
email and send it to the course instructor.
It will be checked for correct grammar, spelling and APA format and posted
on the web in the course Annotated
