Readings and Related Activities  for Winter Quarter ED 419

Before Beginning Course Activities:

• If not yet registered for the course, complete  Course Registration.
• Complete Student Intake Form for the instructor's use.
• Register for forum.
• Purchase Book(s) and Course Packetfrom OSU Bookstore.

Every Week:

• Complete reading, activity and forum question for the week.  When you enter a forum, go first to the message from the instructor for the details of that week's question.
• Check WEB Resources for additional material related to multicultural education, post your favorite in forum.
• Check Glossaries for terms you may need defined.
• Multicultural Glossary (developed at OSU for this course).
• Education Glossary (at another site).

Five times during the quarter:

Write and submit to the instructor a Journal Entry.  Some topics are suggested in the weekly guide below.  You may write off-line and copy into the email form.

This guide is the suggested order for completing coursework.  You may find more people actively engaged in forum interactions if you proceed by the week, however, course activities may be done in any sequence and time you prefer.  As soon as all work is submitted along with a completed scoring guide, your grade will be approved or assigned within one week. Students who have not completed a scoring guide by March 16, 8 am, will be assigned an incomplete for the quarter and are encouraged to complete the course in a time frame that works for them.

Week 1:   January  8-12

Reading:
• Explore Rule One.
• Article by Pang in packet.
• Course Syllabus
• Course Explorations Overview
• Part 1 (Chapters 1 & 2) in Pang book..
• Introduction to Moule article.

Week 2:   January

Reading:
• Explore Rule Two
• Select and begin to read book from list in syllabus: Loewen, Kozol, Delpit,  Armstrong, Tatum.  Send email to instructor reporting your choice.
Activity:  SELECT two from three:
• Read and report on additional section of Banks' book.
• Multiple Intelligent- Multicultural
• Observe with Fresh Eyes

Week 3:   January 24-29

Reading:
• Read Banks' Curriculum Reform.
• Continue reading book from list: Loewen, Kozol, Delpit, Armstrong, Tatum.
Activity:  Plan how and when you will view "Skin Deep"  (Jean will schedule this film for viewling on campus on Wednesday evening, January 26, by request.  Please suggest times).

Week 4:   January 31 - February 5

Reading:
• Article by McEwan  (in course packet).
• Brochures from Oregon Department of Education (in course packet).
View Film Skin Deep.   If you are not able to view this film, then substitute another from list.  This film may be a good topic for a journal entry to the instructor.

Week 5:  February 7 - 12
 

Reading:  Finish book from list: Loewen, Kozol, Delpit, Armstrong, Tatum.  Write a journal entry to instructor about the book, post an "ad" for the book on the course forum.

Activity:  Choice Activity from this list   Submit to forum.

Week 6:  February 14 - 19,  Focus on Rule Three

Explore Rule Three.

Activity:  Select and read your first contribution to Course Annotated Bibliography using the Librarian's assignment Part 1. Submit to course instructor.  You may want to write in a word processor and copy into the email form.

Week 7:   February 21 - 26, Focus on Rule Four

             Explore Rule Four.

Activitiy:  Use Librarian's assignment part two to find a research article of your choice.  Read article and complete a second review for Course Annotated Bibliography.  Submit to instructor.

Reading:
• Fennimore article on Addressing Stereotypical Statements (in course packet).
• Read Web page on Racial Identity Development.
• Read McIntosh article from packet or on web.

 
Related Course Activity:  Prepare a dialogue using Fennimore's article and submit it to the forum.

Week 9:  March 6 - 11, Focus on Rule Five and Six

              Explore Rule Six.

              Read Scenario:  The Teacher and The Parent.
                                       (If your system will not allow you to view this, find a system that will.)

Week 10:  March 13 - 18, Focus on Rule Six,  Coursework due for grade this quarter on March 20, 8 am. Course Activities:

 
• Write synthesis paper (1-2 pages) and submit to instructor.  You may want to write in a word processor and copy into the email form.
• Complete scoring guide.
• Complete course evaluation
