Gillies, Warna D. (1998). Children on the move: Third culture kids.
Childhood Education: Infancy Through Early Adolescence, 75, 36-38.
This article deals with the difficulties that children of various
cultures face when their families move into an entirely different cultural
setting. The term "Third Culture Kids" refers to children who have lived
in a culture other than their own and through this integration of the culture
from the host country and that of the native country, a "third culture"
is created.
I chose this article because I think that it really says a lot
about so many of our students. Being an ESOL teacher, all of my students
have some influence from a culture other than that of the US. Even if they
were born here and are american citizens, most of their parents have come
from cultures outside of the US. Therefore, that culture still has a huge
impact on their lives.
The five questions that I would ask would be to the audience:
1. How many of your students could be "Third Culture Kids"?
2. Have you ever considered this concept before?
3. What are some ways you can help these students to feel more
comfortable in your classroom and school?
4. How can you make sure that these students learn and are successful
in your classroom and school?
5. Have explored the cultures of your students?
