Lesson 6, Task 3

Using Java Applets

Java applets can add interest to your website.  They can also cause problems, not work, or annoy your readers.  It's up to you to decide if they are appropriate for your web site, and if so, to what degree.

A typical Java applet comes in two parts, the HTML code that is inserted into your web page, and the file(s) that actually contain the Java code.  The HTML portion uses <applet> tags to surround the HTML code that will be used by the Java code.  Click here for an example.  You will need to download the clock applet from either the Sun Microsystems site (click on the clock) or from the Java Boutique site.

Start a New Web Page for Your Java Applet

Start a new page and name it practice6-3.htm.  Put some text on the page that announces what the page is for - a Java demonstration page.  Include on the page the Sun Java clock with some of the parameters changed.  For example, the original file has TimesRoman as the font, but the example page uses Arial.Java!

If you want to experiment with other Java applets, put them on the same page.  Downloads are available on the Internet.  JavaBoutique has hundreds of Java applets free.  Many of them contain links back to the authors web page, where they will try to sell other applets or services.  Some don't allow free commercial use unless you pay.

Download other applets at your own risk!  Because this is shareware - beware.  Java can do weird things to a computer if it is not written properly.  If your computer behaves oddly after running a Java applet, discontinue use of the applet.  A reboot may be required.

<--If you can see it, this title is a Java applet.

When your are done with this assignment, SAVE the file on your web as practice6-3.htm and publish it to your website.

Make a Discussion Board posting with a link to practice6-3.htm and include your commentary about this assignment.
