Lesson 3 - Getting Ready

Before beginning the Tasks in Lesson 3, you should have a working website with a single placeholder page.  If this is not the case, be sure to contact the instructor so that the reasons for not having a web site can be worked on.  You can still continue into Lesson 3.

Developing 'Know-How'

As an experienced computer user, you probably already know the technique of browsing the menu system of your software to learn its features.  HTML editors are no different, but the features they offer will vary.  Important abilities and techniques to learn before building your web site include:

  • Making and using tables
  • Advanced text formatting
  • Hyperlinks
  • Preparing images for use
  • Inserting images
  • Styles and stylesheets
  • Standard practices & techniques

The bulleted items above and the image to the right are in a table 2 columns wide and 1 row high.  Border width = 0.

FrontPage has some features that are unique to FrontPage.  These 'proprietary' features can be handy shortcuts to building web sites, but the downside is that other HTML editors and some web servers will not support them.  Examples of FrontPage proprietary features are Themes, WordArt, and the Navigation System.

If you are using FrontPage, we will not be using these features in the beginning, and depending on your client and web server, you may not be able to use them at all.  But feel free to explore the features if you wish in case they may be useful to you later.
