Publishing to 4sightmagazine.com Using WS_FTP

WS_FTP is a free FTP (file transfer protocol) program.  To download it, go to www.ftpplanet.com.

Start WS_FTP, or if already running, click 'Connect'.  You should get this dialog box.

'Profile Name' can be any text you like.  For 'User ID', it is 'username@4sightmagazine.com'.

Enter a password, but leave 'Account' blank.  If you want the info to be saved for next time, check 'Save Pwd' and 'Apply'.  When all is ready, click 'Ok'.

If you get an error message, check settings.  The following works on my home computer:

If you get in, the screen should look about like this:

The /var/www/html folder is where FrontPage users put their websites.  If you are not using FrontPage, proceed to the Unix area by double clicking the green 'up' arrow as indicated above.

Keep clicking until the 'Remote Site' box has only one forward slash.  Then double click on 'Home', then double click on 'public_html'.  The right side of your screen should look about like the one below.

Double click your folder.  You should now be able to move files to and from the remote site.  BE CAREFUL!  WS_FTP will usually do what you ask, even if it's the wrong thing!

To copy, highlight the file(s) or folder(s), then click an arrow in the middle of the screen pointing in the appropriate direction.  To select more than one file or folder, hold down the cntl key while making your selections.

Some Recommended WS_FTP Settings

Have WS_FTP remember your preferred setup.  Do the following two clicks:

The default WS_FTP font is too wide for my tastes.  I like to see entire file names, so I change the font to Arial Narrow.

Clicking in the radio button shown will bring up a font dialog box.
