Development Menu: Growing Together in Community

We are never done learning as an organization or as individuals. As we work to build an ongoing professional development program, the following is what we will launch for the MU starting Fall 2013.

Personal and Professional Growth Workshops

Throughout the year, look for one-time or mini-series workshops and other events that explore topics relevant to personal and professional growth. If there is a topic that you would like to request—or if you have a topic that you are willing to present—please contact us.

Sample topics include:

  • Story-telling on the personal benefits of social justice work
  • Communicating with international students
  • Exploring what it means to be an ally
  • Building multicultural trainings for students
  • Examining race in our organization

Supervising for Inclusion Learning Community

This is an opportunity for all supervisors who want to maximize their effectiveness at recruiting and retaining employees from diverse backgrounds. Meetings will include some content, models, or topics which will provide us context for discussion and idea sharing. The commitment is approximately 10 hours over the span of one year, and the cohort will mutually agree upon meeting frequency and timing.

Sample topics include:

  • Communication styles
  • Hidden organizational cultures and norms
  • Dominant and subordinated group dynamics
  • Stereotype threat

Depending on interest, separate groups or workshops specifically for student managers and/or for advisors may also be offered.
