VPN Setup for Windows



  • ONID account

Recommended MethodWebVPN

(works on Windows 32-bit and 64-bit operating systems)

  1. Go to https://sds.oregonstate.edu
  2. Login using your ONID username and password.
  3. Click "Continue" on the "Information Services VPN Service" window that appears.
  4. Accept the Java applet's request to run.**
  5. Accept the request to install the Cisco AnyConnect client software on your computer.
  6. A window will appear informing you that you are connected to the OSU network. An icon will also appear in the system tray when you successfully connect.  You can right-click this icon and choose to disconnect or quit the VPN connection.
  7. To reconnect in the future, open the "Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client" from the Programs menu and connect to "sds.oregonstate.edu" and use your ONID username and password to reestablish a VPN connection.

**Note: Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge do not support Java. When the website below attempts to download using Java, you will have to wait for 60 seconds for the application to automatically proceed to the next step. 

Windows 8.1 Known Issue
Windows 8.1 users may experience an issue with Cisco AnyConnect suddenly quitting and coming up with the error "Failed to initialize connection subsystem." This is due to a certain Windows security update. It is a known issue, and the fix can be found on our FAQ's page.



Method 2: Standard VPN Client

  1. Download the latest version of the Cisco VPN client software. 
    Version for 32-bit Windows:  Download
    Version for 64-bit Windows:  Download
  2. After your download completes, double-click the file to start installation.
  3. Launch the software by selecting it from the All Programs list, then select Cisco Systems VPN Client folder. The VPN client is located here. 
  4. Profiles have already been set up for you, and all you have to do is select the profile associated with what you need to do.

Windows 8 Known Issue
Occasionally the Standard VPN client will have an issue with Windows 8.  We are aware of the issue and a fix has been found.  The fix can be found on the FAQ's page which has the file to download and instructions on how to apply the solution for the issue and allow the VPN the function properly.


Windows 10 Known Issue
The Standard VPN Client is not currently compatible with Windows 10. At present time, Windows 10 users will need to use the WebVPN instructions listed above.
