What is the Beaver Freezer?

The Beaver Freezer Triathlon is a community event that attracts about 350 participants from throughout the Willamette Valley and even from out of state. It has been the OSU Triathlon Club's annual fundraising event for the past 16 years. Participants' experience varies from first-time triathletes to veterans; age groups range from 15-19 to 60-plus; and there are road bike, mountain bike, and relay categories.

Road bikes and Mountain bikes will ride the same course. The first of 10 heats go into the water at 7:30 a.m.; the last heat will start at 10:15 a.m. Confirmations should be listed on the website starting late February, with heat times posted on the website soon thereafter.

There haven't been any course changes since 2005.

The race will be held at Dixon Recreation Center again this year with the transition area out on 26th street. Both the bike and run will head straight up 26th Street to Campus Way; see the course descriptions below.

Swimmers chatting before the race start.

Swim: 500 yards

20 lengths (10 laps) in a 25 yard pool, up to 4 per lane. Racers work out start order with lane mates, there will be volunteer lap counters, and drafting is OK. Check in at least an hour before your start. A locker room will be available for participants. Swim location will be at Dixon Rec Center.

Bike: 12 miles (bike map)

Mostly flat, some hills, two out and back sections. Participants leave the transition area heading north on 26th st, and then turn left onto Campus Way. After turning north on 35th Street, the race heads west on Harrison Blvd all the way until 53rd St/Walnut Blvd/Oak Creek intersection. At this point, the course heads north on Walnut Blvd for about a mile until the turn around just before Walnut Park and heading back to the 53rd/Walnut Blvd./Oak Creek intersection. Participants then head out Oak Creek and turn around at NW Tanager Drive before heading back to Harrison Blvd. and retracing 35th to Campus Way to 26th back to the transition area. Course maps will be available in the race packets.

A Snell/Ansi approved helmet must be worn. Drafting is NOT OK! Volunteers will manage traffic at intersections, but CYCLISTS MUST BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR OWN SAFETY! No water or sports drink aid station. Bike rack spots are pre-assigned.

No headphones allowed on the bike or run courses. Use of headphones and/or mp3 players while competing in the race will result in a disqualification.

Competitors heading out for the bike portion of the race.

Runners make their way around campus.

Run: 3.1 miles (run map)

Mostly flat and fast course. After heading north on 26th Street out of the transition area, participants make three loops around the OSU campus. From 26th Street, the loop heads east on Campus Way, south on 15th Street, and west on Jefferson Way and back to 26th Street. The finish is located in the center of the OSU Memorial Union quad. Water and sports drink available on the course and at the finish line. No headphones allowed on the run course. Use of headphones and/or mp3 players while competing in the race will result in a disqualification.
