1. Why Rush Sigma Nu?

Sigma Nu is a bond that will stay with you for life, not just when you graduate OSU. It’s a bond that you will have with a newly initiated brother, or with 80 year old alumni telling you stories of the old days. Sigma Nu is knowing that no matter where you go or what you do, you will have the support of your brothers. Sigma Nu is about friendships that last a lifetime. Sigma Nu is a family you have on campus even when you are miles from home. Sigma Nu is about reunions, homecoming, and returning to the house and being treated like you never left. Sigma Nu is an experience that will change you and make you a better and stronger man. Being a Sigma Nu is also knowing that no matter where you go that you will always meet other Sigma Nu’s who share your bond; whether it be in a chapter house in another state, or in an airport waiting for a flight. You can not get this from sitting in a dorm room, or joining another club on campus. Clubs come and go, but fraternities survive the test of time.

2. How do I join a fraternity?

Your first step to joining a fraternity is participating in the formal or informal rush activities we offer or to come in contact with our chapter so that we can let you know more information about our fraternity.

3. What if I don’t like it?

We definetly don’t want you to feel trapped once you become a candidate. If you feel that you are not comfortable with joining or living at the fraternity, you can let anyone in the house know – we realize that fraternity life is not for everyone.

4. What is formal rush? What do I have to do?

Formal rush is the time where non-affiliated guys visit fraternities to see if they are interested in “pledging” or becoming a fraternity member at the beginning of fall term. Even if you aren’t interested in joining a fraternity, rush is a great way to meet people on campus. During rush, guys check-out fraternities, and fraternities meet those guys that are interested in joining a fraternity. When you go through rush, do not hesitate to ask tough questions. Research the houses you may be interested in-just because a friend of yours is rushing one house does not mean that house will be right for you. Ask each fraternity about hazing, academics/required GPA, social and philanthropic activities, campus involvement, intramurals, and national fraternity and alumni activities. Most of all, have fun and be yourself.

5. What is a bid?

A bid is an invitation from a fraternity to become a member.

6. How do I get a bid?

Bids are commonly given to a guy that shows interest in joining our house after learning about us. If you know that you want to join, don’t hesitate to let the Recruitment Chairs know.

7. How do I contact you guys?

The easiest way to contact us is through our question/interest form. You can also contact us by calling our house phone number ((541) 757-6169) or by any of the emails listed in the contact section.

8. When can I drop by and visit?

You are welcome to stop by the house at any time to meet and learn more information about us. Many people are intimidated by Greek houses and are scared or not willing to come by, but the truth is that we encourage and welcome people to come in and learn about our house.

9. My parents don’t like fraternities, what should I do?

It is very understandable for many people to not like fraternities, since fraternities have misleading stereotypes. We have a list of frequently asked questions for parents that you may want to have them look at. We are also very willing to meet and talk with your parents to dispel any inaccurate information.

10. Do you have a candidate program, and how does it work?

The candidate program begins as soon as you accept the bid to join Sigma Nu as a candidate. After accepting the bid card, the candidate program officer, known as the Marshal, will discuss the candidate program with you. Weekly meetings are required of candidates so they may participate in phase one of LEAD, which stands for Leadership, Ethics, Achievement and Development. LEAD is Sigma Nu’s education program that covers Sigma Nu history, personal goal setting and program management, and risk reduction, just to name a few topics. For more information on the LEAD program, check out the LEAD FAQ (off-site).

11. What grades are required to join?

Academics and personal studies are very important to the fraternity. The minimum grade point average required of all Sigma Nu members is 2.50. We understand that college students can have a bad quarter, and to help you get your grades back up, we have an academic program that all members are required to participate if they have a GPA below a 3.0 in a term.

12. Do you haze?

No. Never. In 1869, Sigma Nu was founded on the principles of Love, Honor and Truth – and against the hazing present at Virginia Military Institute. Hazing is against our Chapter, General Fraternity and Inter-Fraternity Council policies. We do all we reasonably can to prevent it, and we are looking for members who will carry on our non-hazing tradition.
