Helping The Community

pretending to be interested

Alpha Lambda Zeta chapter at Oregon State University has a long and prosperous history of helping the Corvallis community become a better place. We donate our time and effort to help the community with such projects as: raising food for the local Food Share program; helping an alumnus with the library book drive; coordinating the Red Cross Blood Drive on campus; and setting up basketball/volleyball workshops for the Special Olympics.

One of our annual philanthropies is called the Watermelon Bash.  This week-long philanthropy raises thousands of dollars each year for the Special Olympics.  Some of the events are:

1)  A booth in the quad where people can put money into the participants' jars which helps them gain points for the week

2)  A member dressed as "Watermelon Man" runs around the quad for a day and sorority girls try to catch him to gain more points

3) We hide watermelons in the Quad at night and sororities have to find them for points

4)  Each sorority decorates a watermelon, which are then judged for points

5)  Each sorority competes in a series of events that are held at our house on Thursday.  The points from all these events are then tallied and the coveted watermelon mallet is awarded to the winning team. These are only some of the events that take place during the week-long event.  Not only is this a lot of fun, but it's for a good cause.
