Hydrophiles Field Trips

Winter 2006 Cross Country Skiing to SNOTEL site

Where: SNOTEL site at Mt Hood with Anne Nolin's Snow Hydrology class!

OSU's resident Snow Hydrology Expert, Dr. Anne Nolin of the Geoscience Department, has graciously agreed to allow the Hydrophiles to join her GEO 587 Snow Hydrology class in a tour of the Mt. Hood SNOTEL site for a day of snowshoeing and science!  SNOTEL Employee and OSU Grad (and Hydrophile) Melissa Clark will be assisting.

SNOTEL is an automated system designed to measure snow pack in the western US, run by the NRCS.  We will view the site, perform a transect measuring snow water equivalent, and learn a bit about snow related issues!  After a half day of science, we will leave Anne's class and tour the snow covered area, either on ski or snowshoe.

  When: February 11, 2006

The Trip will be on February 11th.  We will leave Corvallis early (~7AM) and return that night (~7PM).  There are a lot of details, including what to bring and how we are getting there.  If you are interested in the trip, please let me know and I will send a second email with details.  It will be cold, and we need to be prepared!  The portion with Anne will necessitate snowshoes, which can be rented from the ORC on campus (http://recsports.org/orst/programs/orc/) for cheap.  The latter portion of the day could involve skiing or snowshoeing, depending on group and personal preference.

Please let me know if you are interested.  We need to get a list of participants by next Wednesday (the 8th) to make plans.
