Garbage, Recycling, Furniture Removal

Garbage

There are three dumpsters to put your garbage in.  Garbage days are Monday and Thursday.  If you have larger items of trash, please wait until the day before the garbage is picked up to put it in, to make sure there is enough room.

We would also like to remind you to take your trash and recycling items directly to the dumpster and recycle area—do not leave your trash sitting on your porch.  Raccoons have been seen around the complex at night, and they will rip open trash bags to get food.  We do not want to encourage raccoons, cats, or rodents to live around Orchard Court.

Be aware that identity theft is the fastest-growing crime in the USA.  Criminals could steal information from the dumpsters and use it to get credit in your name.  Here are some tips to make recycling your junk mail and personal documents safer:

·        Any document with personal information such as name and birth date, social security number, student ID number, driver’s license number, bank account numbers, and credit card numbers, could be used by an identity thief.

·        Protect your identity and your credit history by shredding or tearing up receipts, old bank statements, student account statements, credit card bills and receipts, and unused credit card offers before recycling them.

Recycling

Corvallis Disposal provides  us with an easy way to recycle—Commingled Bins.

Recycling is not difficult, and saves money, and the environment!

Note:  When flattening plastic bottles and tin cans, please DO NOT do it on your kitchen floor or carpeted areas as it may damage the floor—please flatten items outside on your concrete porch or the Recycling Center floor.

Corvallis Disposal has made recycling even easier for us!

Now you only have to sort your recycling items into a few categories.  We have new labels on the bins in the recycling center, so please read them next time you recycle.

The three main categories are:

1.      Cardboard—continue putting cardboard (squashed as flat as possible) into the large bin.

2.      Glass—sort your glass into three bins—CLEAR GLASS in one, BROWN GLASS in one, and GREEN & BLUE GLASS in on.!

3.      EVERYTHING ELSE! - Now you can put all your other recyclables in any of the other bins marked COMMINGLED—this includes plastic bottles and tubs, newspapers, paperboard, magazines, and steel, aluminum and tin cans.

You’ll still need to rinse your recyclables, but you no longer have to remove lids and labels!

It's easy to make garbage. But it's not so easy to get rid of it. Recycling helps save money and our environment.

Keep the three R's in mind: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

At the OC recycling center (located at the south end of the Community Center) you can recycle:

·        Paper & Paperboard

·         Cardboard & cardboard boxes

·         Steel, tin and aluminum cans

·         Glass bottles & jars

Plastic bottles & tubs marked 1-7

Furniture

It is not okay to leave furniture or other items next to the dumpsters.  If you need to get rid of furniture or large items, contact the OC Manager for a list of recycling resources.

Moving out soon?  Spring cleaning?  Bought some new furniture and need to get rid of the old stuff?

Here are some ideas:

·         Advertise with a notice on the laundry doors—FOR SALE, or FREE….!  You never know who might want your old furniture!

·         Call Benton Furniture Share—if your furniture is in good condition (clean, no rips or tears), they will pick it up and donate it to a family in need.  Ph # 754-9511.

·         If your furniture is not usable, take it to the Corvallis Disposal Landfill—call 754-0444 for details, or to request special pick up of items.

·         DO NOT put large items in the dumpsters (such as couches, mattresses, etc.)  If the lid will not close, the garbage truck will not be able to empty the dumpster!

·         You will be charged for removal and disposal of large items—including labor to get them out of the dumpster!

·         DO NOT leave large items next to the dumpsters.

·         You will be charged for the removal of any items left by the dumpsters.

·         If we do not know who is responsible, the Orchard Court operations budget is charged for removal—and this could result in higher rent rates for current and future residents!

Be considerate and take responsibility for disposing of your unwanted furniture and household items—it benefits us all!

Playground Trash cans

There are three outdoor trash cans for the East, West and North playground areas.  Please tell your children to use these trash cans to throw away any trash they have on the playgrounds—such as food wrappers.  These trash cans are not to be used for throwing away your household trash—you still need to take household trash to the dumpsters.

“FREE” BOXES

Where else can you rummage through a box of clothes and take what you like—for free?!!!

FHA volunteers regularly empty the “free” boxes in each laundry.  “Free” boxes are for you to put a few items of clothing you don’t want any more.  You are also welcome to take clothes out of the “free” boxes.  What a great way to recycle children’s clothes (they grow so fast!), and adult’s clothes that are in good condition.

Please remember—do not put toys, household items, or large amounts of clothes in the “free” boxes when you move out– please take them directly to Goodwill, Vina Moses or other charitable collection site.

Thanks for recycling, and for keeping the laundry rooms free of clutter!
