How does Greek life benefit me? Back to Questions - Back to Top

Joining any fraternity can help make the transition from high school to college easier. Becoming a part of a fraternity can help your son develop life long friendships. For many members, these chapters become a home away from home. Every fraternity also promotes a set of core values that they strive for in their daily lives, including academics, leadership, service towards others, and friendship.

What does 'Rushee', 'Associate Member', and all those other terms mean?

The recruitment process is full of terms that are not normally used by people outside the Greek Community. A rushee, or recruit, is someone who interested in the house; an associate member, or pledge, is someone who accepted to become a part of a house, but is not a full member yet. A more detailed list of Greek Terms is given by the Office of Greek life.

What commitment is required in joining?

Delta Upsilon, as a non-secret house, believes in being very open and honest about our membership requirements. We feel that no one can be expected to truly become a part of something without understanding what is required of them.

To become an associate member, someone must merely meet people in the house, attend a few events, and express an interest in joining. There are little requirements to become a associate member because it is only the first step in becoming a member of any house, simply put this is a chance for membership and the associate member to get to know each other.

To become a full member in Delta Upsilon, we require prospective members to:

These requirements may seem overwhelming at first, but the ten week ‘pledgeship’ is designed to help a new member achieve all of these tasks without becoming overwhelmed by them.

All fraternity’s can offer friendships, academic strengths, and social involvement.

Where is the house relative to campus and dorms?

We are located at 235 NW 25th St, one block north of campus. While dorms may be on campus, Delta Upsilon and ‘Greek Row’ are closer to many buildings on campus. Map/Directions

What is the physical condition of the house compared to dorms?

The dorms, like Greek houses, vary widely in their condition. Delta Upsilon was built in 1922 and is the oldest physical chapter house on campus. The house is maintained by all members of the house, not just associate members. Within the last three years we have completed work on a new basketball court with stadium lighting, a new BBQ, new carpet throughout the house, new doors, new windows, and new shower fixtures. Pictures of the interior of the house can be found on our website under Chapter House.

How much does it cost?

The cost of living in Delta Upsilon is $620 a month, which covers room and board, ten meals a week plus an open kitchen on the weekends, and other fees. This cost may seem high, but it is cheaper the most of the dorms at Oregon State by about $1000 a year.

Also, if you are stuck in a contract with the dorms or a lease agreement, you can live out for the remainder of your contract; the cost of living out is $120 a month with food, and $25 without food. We also offer a number of housing scholarships, information can be found on our “Scholarship” page. If you have more specific questions on the cost of the house please email our Treasurer listed below.

What help can I get in my housing contract?

With the year long housing contracts in the dorms, we are willing to help interested people use the money towards the dorms as a credit to the house. We are willing to do as much as possible to help with these contracts, and more specific information can be given by our treasurer on a case by case basis. Please email our treasurer for more details.

How will joining affect my GPA? Won’t my son’s grades drop?

Associate members are required to have at least 12 hours of studying done, under supervision at the Valley Library, every week. This very demanding system of study tables, in combination with explanations on time management, academic resources, and advice from older members have resulted in our associate members getting in the top five GPA for the last two years, and teach skills that are used throughout a member’s academic life. Please email our scholarship chair for more information about our academic programs.

All of my friends are in the dorms, why should I leave them?

Delta Upsilon is an inclusive not an exclusive group. Every member has friends outside of the house, and it does not interfere with anything. Joining a house merely provides someone with the chance to make more connections in their social life. We actually find that having associate members live in dorms for a term or two offers both him and the house more connections to the university, and assuming the experience is a good one, offers a chance to bring more people into the Greek Community

Can I still join after my freshman year ?

Fraternities are always looking for new members; it is not limited to the freshman year. We have many members who have joined in their sophomore or junior years. The requirements in the house are still the same, but being an older member in young class can offer a chance for leadership and the house rewards higher academic standing.

Are the stereotypes true? Back in my day…Is it still the same now? What about alcohol/drugs/etc?

Delta Upsilon and the whole Greek Community work carefully to undo the harmful effects of stereotyping. Delta Upsilon prides itself on academic strength, community and university involvement, and the development of the individual. We educate all members about the responsible use of alcohol and limit the social dangers of the first year away from home, and we are a dry house eliminating the risks associated with parties at the house. We do not tolerate hazing in any form. We promote academic success and community involvement in our own actions.

While we are aware of the negative stereotypes of the Greek Community, our goal is to both eliminate actions that lead to the old way of thinking, and to promote of the benefits that are a part of our daily lives.
