The Associated Students of Oregon State University

City Wide WiFi Network

Project History

Last year, the Associated Students of Oregon State University (ASOSU) began discussions with the City of Corvallis and a third party internet service provider (ISP), about a proposed City Wide WiFi network. As a result of those discussions, the ISP agreed to provide wireless network access to all OSU students, at a substantially discounted price (in exchange for a bulk purchase).

In December 2007, ASOSU sent an e-mail to all current OSU students, telling them about this project and asking them if they were interested in participating (through a web based survey). To see the results of the December 2007 web survey, click on the December 2007 Survey Results link in the Resources pane.

After reviewing the survey results, it became clear that OSU students are interested in learning more about this new service. So, in an effort to answer the most common questions about this project, ASOSU has created a Frequently Asked Questions (F.A.Q.) web page. The survey results also indicated that the OSU student community wanted to try out the service before they made a decision about switching to it. Based on this feedback, the third party ISP has decided to install wireless network service in part of the city and allow OSU students to try the service for free.

Summer WiFi Trial

ASOSU would like to invite any current OSU student, who will be taking classes over the summer and who lives in the part of the city where the new service will be provided, to try out the City Wide WiFi network. Volunteers will receive free internet service for the duration of the test. To take part in the test, you must agree to do the following.

  1. Take a short survey, to determine your expectations before the test.
  2. Record your impressions of the quality/speed/reliability of the service.
  3. Re-take the short survey, to determine if your opinions have changed after using the service.

(NOTE: The pre & post trial survey results will be made available to all current OSU students at the end of the trial. The survey will contain no questions that can be used to identify you personally. Your impressions of the service will be recorder in a web based forum, which will also be released to all current OSU students at the end of the trial. You will be asked to review and edit your forum postings, to remove any information that you do not wish to be made public, before they are released. ASOSU will honor any student’s request to withhold their pre & post trial survey or web forum postings.)
