The Associated Students of Oregon State University

City Wide WiFi Network

Eligibility

The City Wide WiFi network trial is open to all OSU students who live in the trial area. The trial area includes every city block within the rectangle formed by the intersections of SW 14th, SW Adams, NW Monroe and the waterfront.

Benefits

People who participate in the trial will receive the same wireless network access that they would receive if they were a subscriber to the planned City Wide WiFi network.

Download speeds will be capped at 3Mbps, with upload speeds limited to 384 Kbps. In-home receivers will be provided upon request. An in-home receiver is not required to connect to the City Wide WiFi network. However, if the signal from the street does not reach every part of your residence, the in-home receiver may fix the problem. If you do decide to request an in-home receiver, you will be asked to provide credit card information. Your credit card will not be billed unless you fail to return the in-home receiver (in working order) at the end of the trial; if you fail to return the in-home receiver, your credit card will be billed $75 for a replacement. Otherwise, you will pay nothing for participating in this trial. The ISP recommends the use of an in-home booster, for the best WiFi experience.

Phone support will be available during normal business hours (i.e. Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.). Phone support hours will be expanded to 24 x 7 for a full City Wide WiFi deployment.

Requirements

To enroll in the City Wide WiFi trial you must meet the following requirements:-

  1. Live within the trial area.
  2. Be a current OSU student (i.e. have an active ONID account). You do not have to be enrolled in summer classes to participate. As long as you are enrolled in fall classes, you can be involved in the trail.
  3. Be present during the trial period.
  4. Agree to take a short survey, to determine your expectations before the test.
  5. Record your impressions of the quality/speed/reliability of the service during the trial.
  6. Retake the short survey, to determine if your opinions have changed after using the service.

(NOTE: The pre & post trial survey results will be made available to all current OSU students at the end of the trial. The survey will contain no questions that can be used to identify you personally. Your impressions of the service will be recorder in a web based forum, which will also be released to all current OSU students at the end of the trial. You will be asked to review and edit your forum postings, to remove any information that you do not wish to be made public, before they are released. ASOSU will honor any student’s request to withhold their pre & post trial survey or web forum postings.)

Instructions

If you are interested in participating in the trial, send e-mail to WiFiTrial@oregonstate.edu. You will receive a response that includes a link to the pre/post-trial survey, the URL and password for the web forum (where you can record your experiences) and the phone support number for the ISP.

Once the trial has begun, you should direct all your questions to the ISP phone support number; the web forum is only intended to serve as a diary of your experience using the City Wide WiFI network.
