Summer 2007

Many changes are taking place at the Beta Upsilon Chapter House at OSU. Brand new high-speed internet service will be in place at the start of the school year. Our dining room is getting a whole new look - hard wood floors! New carpet, fresh paint, newly tiled bathrooms, new furniture and appliances - WOW!

Two of our members are venturing beyond the hallowed halls of OSU this year. Jackie Stenberg, our chapter president, is wrapping up a summer study-abroad program in Denmark, while Alex Engels-Smith is getting ready to spend fall term doing the same in Europe. Bravo ladies!!!

End of the Year News 2007

The women of Oregon State University ended an eventful 2006-07 year with sisterhood, philanthropy, and fun!  Spring term began with initiation of six new fabulous Phis, including a legacy - the daughter of one of our advisors.  Most recently, several sisters had the treat to attend a luncheon hosted by Bertha Barry, Beta Upsilon’s first chapter president.  We were very involved in philanthropic events around campus, earning first place in both the NPC competition raising money for orphans in Uganda and Delta Upsilon’s 3 vs. 3 basketball tournament, and second place in Sigma Kappa’s volleyball tournament!  OSU Phis took great pride in helping restore a local community park.  Our campus-wide 'Capture the Flag Spring Phi-lanthropy' was a great success, which we plan to continue next spring.  Finally, Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity invited our chapter to participate in "San Fran,” a week-long celebration of Spring fun, which began with a surprise wake-up breakfast at 6:30 AM!

Mom’s Weekend, an annual OSU event, included a designer purse and jeans party, a barbecue with Theta Chi fraternity, and a brunch and basket auction, which raised nearly $3000 for our Parents’ Club Fund – the money raised is used to further beautify our house.  Julie Estes was honored with Beta Upsilon’s Martha Crow Woman of the Year Award for her continued display of character, leadership and dedication to Alpha Phi.

We sadly say good-bye to six amazing seniors – Julie Estes, Alisha Landers, Traci Schwerdt, Gabi Duarte, Lindsey Law, and Jill Domme.  While we’ll miss our sisters dearly, we’re confident they will go out in the world and do great things!

Spring 2007

Our house is filling up!

Spring quarter welcomed eleven new live-in Phis, bringing the number of girls living in the house to forty.  Although hectic, the challenge of getting everyone settled into their rooms is nearly complete, and we’re excited to have so many of our new members under one roof.

Informal recruitment has been a big success - thank you Ashley and Sara. We are very excited about our spectaular new Alpha Phis.  Welcome Hanna, Brynn, Whitney, Natalie, Kelly, Becca, Jessica and Brie!

 Looking Good

Beautiful new flowers, trimmed trees and bark dust. New Greek letters for all to see from Harrison Street. A new dishwasher, fridge and freezer.  Cheerful added touches throughout the house. Beta Upsilon members came back from spring break to find that wonderful renovations had been made to our beloved Alpha Phi house.

We have other spruce-up and fun house projects on our wish list for the future.  Of course, donations and contributions to help us achieve these goals are heartily welcomed and greatly appreciated!

Philanthropy Event

On May 26th, OSU Phis sponsored a campus wide "Capture the Flag" competition, again raising money for the Alpha Phi Foundation. The event was hugely succesful, raising more than $600! Thank you to all who participated!

Winter 2007

Oregon’s Three Alpha Phi Chapters Host Annual Red Dress Gala

The beautiful young ladies of Beta Upsilon (OSU), Tau (Oregon), and Theta Alpha (Linfield) Chapters came together to host the First Annual Red Dress Gala.  Hosted at the Alumni Center at Oregon State University, the fun-filled evening was a huge success, raising $10,325 for the Alpha Phi Foundation and cardiac care.  Some of the evening’s highlights included a silent auction, the “Alpha Phi Red Dress” design competition and fashion show, musical entertainment by Outspoken, and keynote speaker Rebecca Zannatta, former director of the Alpha Phi Foundation.

The Silent Auction consisted of items generously donated by alumnae, family, friends, community businesses and the girls themselves.  Many delightful treats such as Alpha Phi hand crafted works of art, wine baskets, services from local merchants and professionals, golf packages and University memorabilia were sold, with all proceeds going directly to the Alpha Phi Foundation.

A first of its kind, students from the Design and Human Environment program at Oregon State University competed by creating beautiful and unique dresses, the only rule being its color - red.  Our very own Beta Upsilon ladies modeled some of the designers’ dresses.  A gorgeous crimson floor-length gown with an open back in the shape of a heart won first place, and was designed by a young woman who’s own family had been touched by heart disease.

"Outspoken," a popular OSU all men’s a Capella group performed throughout the evening.  The 15 men encircled guests’ tables, serenading them with numbers such as “I Wish They All Could Be Alpha Phi Girls”, a twist on the Beach Boys’ California Girls.  Topping off the evening, Rebecca Zanatta related her experiences with the Foundation, and inspired guests as to the importance of women’s’ cardiac health, research and education.

The evening was magical for all in attendance thanks to the tremendous effort and cooperation of the three Oregon chapters.  Among the many alumnae, friends and family in attendance was Bertha Jeanette Barry - the very first president of Beta Upsilon Chapter.  The OSU girls enjoyed spending time talking with her and learning about the beginnings of their chapter.  All in all, a successful event to be repeated in years to come!
