OSU Strategic Plan
The University's Road Map for the 21st Century

  1. Recruitment and retention of students of color
    • Maintain adequate level of student services, including recruiting, admissions, tutoring support, academic advising, culturally appropriate counseling and support, cultural centers, retention of critical personnnel.
    • Develop and maintain adequate scholarship support for minority students (severaly compromised by loss of UMAS scholarships).
    • Make articulation a central function: develop liaision and partnerships with secondary schools, community colleges, and other agencies to improve minority student access to the university.
    • Ensure ethical treatment of athletes: support academics as well as athletic performance.
  2. Recruitment and retention of faculty of color
    • Develop and maintain a strategic plan for faculty recruitment incentive programs and affirmative action initiatives, including training for search committees. Link unit performance evaluation to success in diversity hiring.
    • Review faculty equity issues in terms of payment and advancement.
    • Restructure evaluation for promotion, tenure, and advancement: formal recognition for additional work done by some faculty of color, without which change in the instituion is impossible.
  3. Curriculum
    • Retain critical components of the baccalaureaute core (DPD, cultural diversity requirements, etc.).
    • Strengthen representation of communities of color, their histories and perspectives, in core curricula (Ethnic Studies, etc.), and integrate in other parts of the curriculum.
    • Improve training of faculty to address diverse student body (diverse patterns of cultural interaction, learning styles): provide a more functional classroom environment.
    • Address specific needs of communities of color in distance education.
