OSU Day at the Capitol

Tuesday, April 17, 2007

Each legislative session Oregon State University supporters take a special day to paint the State Capitol in Salem orange and black. OSU Day this session is scheduled for Tuesday, April 17. The day provides legislators with an opportunity to experience the significant impact OSU has in Oregon — and specifically in their legislative districts. The various Colleges and programs at OSU provide display booths staffed by knowledgeable representatives. Throughout the day, OSU students, faculty, and alumni meet informally with legislators to discuss OSU's innovative educational and research endeavors throughout the state. The day includes a 5:00 p.m. reception in the galleria that connects legislators with their OSU constituents. OSU Day puts Oregon State University in the forefront of legislator’s minds and reminds them of the important role of Oregon’s only land-, sea-, sun- and space-grant university.

If you are interested in attending the OSU Day reception, a chartered bus will be departing from the Jefferson Street Bookstore entrance at 3:30pm and returning at 7:00pm.

The Oregon Pioneer statue that tops the building is another work by Ulric Ellerhusen. This heroic figure represents the spirit of Oregon's early settlers. Cast in bronze and finished in gold leaf, it weights 8.5 tons and is hollow inside. The base of the 23-foot high statue is 140 feet above the ground. The statue is reached by 121 steps spiraling up into the tower from the fourth floor of the building out onto a deck providing a spectacular view of Salem.
