What is Food Science and what does a food scientist do?
Food science is the study of food composition, processing, safety, nutrition, cooking, and consumption; basically everything that happens to your food from the time it is harvested until it is purchased.
A food scientist studies the physical, microbiological, and chemical makeup of food. From the farm gate to market shelves, food scientists develop foods and beverages in response to society’s needs and demands, working to make foods more nutritious, more convenient, more fun. Food scientists look for better ways to select, preserve, process, and package food products including the ingredients that go into them. The food industry is the world’s largest industry and food scientists continue to be in demand as the focus on food increases due to heightened awareness of diet, health, and food safety world wide. As a food scientist, you’ll help to feed the world through science and technology!

What opportunities can graduate study in the Department of Food Science and Technology offer me?
We offer graduate programs leading to both M.S. and Ph.D. degrees. Although most of our graduate students have Food Science or Fermentation Science backgrounds, a number of our students have prior degrees in engineering, chemistry, and a variety of other areas. We attract students from around the world as well as from throughout the United States.
