General Information about Transferring

When transferring to another institution, it is important to understand that financial aid funds are not transferable to other schools. Therefore, you just transfer your financial aid records to the school you will be attending during the academic year. You may not receive the same types or amounts of aid at the new school because of the differences in cost of attendance and the availability of funds. Awards are determined by student eligibility, the cost of attendance at each school, and the total number of aid dollars available at each school at the time you make your request.

You should contact the financial aid office of the school you will be attending to determine their aid application procedures, what aid is available, what forms may be required, and if you must be admitted before your file will be reviewed.

You should allow up to three months for the necessary paperwork to be processed. Be sure to follow through with the process by staying in touch with the school to make sure paperwork is being received and your file is complete.

Pell Grant Eligibility

If you are receiving a Pell Grant, you should also be eligible to receive this aid at the school you plan to attend, unless your former school granted a special exception. Special exceptions granted at one institution may not necessarily be granted at another. The new school will only receive the original information you supplied on your FAFSA.You need to notify the financial aid office at the new school to make another request for a special exception. Your new school will determine your eligibility for a Pell Grant based on your attendance at that institution.

Loan Eligibility

If you are receiving a loan from your former school, you should also be able to receive a loan from the school you plan to attend. However, if you received your yearly maximum at your former school, you may not have eligibility left at the school you plan to attend. Check with your former school's financial aid office to determine if you will be eligible for additional loans at the school you are going to attend.

Transferring TO Oregon State University:

Oregon State University welcomes transfer students; however students must have applied for admission before a financial aid package will be offered. Students may not receive the same funding at OSU that they did at the previous institution. Below is a helpful checklist to make sure your transition to OSU is smooth and successful.

1. Add Oregon State University to your financial aid application by calling the central processor at 1-800-433-3243 or adding the school code (003210) to your Student Aid Report.
2. Contact your current school's financial aid office and cancel any financial aid for subsequent terms/semesters.
3. Apply for admission at OSU.
4. Receive an award notification or a request for additional information from the OSU Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships.
5. Turn in any forms that are mailed by OSU.
6. Request deferment forms be sent to your previous institution if you received a Perkins Loan.

Transferring FROM Oregon State University:

To transfer from Oregon State University to another institution, you may want to follow the checklist below to make sure your transition is complete and that you are awarded financial aid at your new school.

1. Add the school to your financial aid application by calling the central processor at 1-800-433-3243 or adding the school code to your Student Aid Report.
2. Notify Oregon State University Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships that you will not be attending subsequent terms, and have them cancel your financial aid.
3. Contact your new school's financial aid office to see what their procedures are regarding transferring information, and find out if you must be admitted to be offered financial aid.
4. Pick up deferment forms from the OSU Student Loan Office if you have received Perkins Loans from OSU. You will need these forms filled out by your new school's registrar or financial aid office to insure that you will not go into repayment of your loan.
