Study Abroad and Exchange Programs

Oregon State University actively encourages faculty and students to participate in study abroad or exchange programs sponsored by the University, the Oregon University System (OUS), or the Northwest Council on Study Abroad (NCSA).

There are many opportunities for students to study abroad as part of their OSU education, and there are also possibilities for OSU faculty members to serve as program directors. The OSU and OUS agreements bring international students and faculty to our campus as part of the reciprocal exchanges.

OSU students may earn OSU credit in over 30 programs in over 20 different countries: Australia, Austria, Canada, China, Denmark, Ecuador, England, Finland, France, Germany, Ghana, Greece, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, New Zealand, Norway, Russia, South Africa, Spain, Thailand, Wales, Vietnam.

OSU exchange agreements provide the framework for the exchange of students and scholarly research, as well as for the establishment of lasting relationships with international institutions.

There are faculty opportunities as resident directors of the programs in China, France, Germany, and Japan, as well as term–long faculty positions in the programs at Athens, Greece; Angers, France; London, England; Macerata or Siena Italy; and Vienna, Austria.

Faculty interested in learning more about these programs should contact the Office of International Education.

International Internships, International Degree, and International Undergraduate Research Program

Faculty have the opportunity to mentor students participating in an international internship or in the International Degree Program.

IE 3, the Global Internships Program, enables OSU students from all fields of study to integrate an international internship experience into their degree program. Internships can vary in length from one term to three terms, and in format, to include a domestic internship or a study abroad program. Internship placements are in a wide range of countries. Language requirements vary depending upon the specific job description of the position. The program is open to Baccalaureate and Masters students and the internships are taken for academic credit. An internship is ideal preparation for a career after graduation. An international experience is increasingly important to employers.

The International Degree Program is unique to OSU and allows undergraduate students to earn a second degree in International Studies within their major field of study. In addition to the primary degree requirements, International Degree students must complete an additional 32 credits of course work, which involves four classes from the Baccalaureate Core Curriculum, an overseas learning experience, a senior thesis and senior–level equivalency in a second language. Students in any major are eligible for the program. Scholarships are available to help cover the costs of students’ overseas learning experience. Currently, there are about 80 students enrolled. They come from every academic unit of the University.

The new International Undergraduate Research Program combines undergraduate research, multi–disciplinary work in an international context, and language study in Japanese, Thai, Chinese, Russian, Spanish or Vietnamese. Students with an interest in Environmental Sciences, Public Health, and Political Science form multidisciplinary teams that prepare on campus to conduct research at an overseas site for a term. The overseas sites are located at OSU partner institutions in China, Japan, Russia, South Africa, Thailand and Vietnam. Scholarships and faculty mentor stipends are available.

For more information on these programs, please contact the Office of International Education.
